Splitting PDFs for Online Submissions Without Losing Pages

Application portals often demand each document as a separate file — even if you have them as one. Splitting cleanly is faster than rescanning.

You have your CV, transcripts, recommendation letters and personal statement combined into one PDF. The portal you’re uploading to wants four separate files. Splitting takes 30 seconds; rebuilding the four source files from scratch takes an afternoon.

Three split modes — pick the right one

 • By range. “Pages 1–3, 4–7, 8–12, 13–15.” Best for known-structure documents.
 • By every N pages. “Split every 1 page” turns a 50-page PDF into 50 single-page PDFs. Useful for batch printing or per-page processing.
 • By bookmark / page label. If the source PDF has named bookmarks (TOC entries), split on those — automatic and structurally correct.

The naming question

Default split output is named by page range (pages-1-3.pdf, pages-4-7.pdf). For application portals, rename each to match the field it’s going into (cv.pdf, transcripts.pdf). It’s the kind of detail that signals “this person is organised” to admissions and recruiters.

Common splits that come up monthly

 1. University applications: CV, transcript, references, statement.
 2. Visa applications: passport, financials, employment letter, supporting documents.
 3. Property purchases: ID, bank statements, employment letter, deposit proof.
 4. Tax filings: per-document upload to client portals.

Verification before you upload

Open each split file once. Confirm:

 • Right pages are in the right file.
 • Each file is under the portal’s size cap.
 • File names match the portal’s expectations.

That 30-second check has saved many applicants from “missing document” rejections.

Frequently asked questions

What if the portal's max size is smaller than my split file?

Compress the split first — most documents shrink dramatically without quality loss. See our compress for email guide.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Yes if you have the password. The tool unlocks, splits, and optionally re-applies a password to each output file.
