Why we built PDFRun differently
When we built PDFRun, the most consistent complaint we heard from people switching from incumbent PDF tools wasn’t about features — it was about friction. You’d open a free PDF tool, compress one file, then a second, and at the third file see a "you’ve hit your free limit, sign up to continue" gate. Or you’d download a compressed PDF and find a watermark stripe across the corner of every page. Or you’d try to do something on a phone in the middle of an actual workflow and be redirected to create an account first.
Those friction points exist for a reason — they’re the conversion mechanism of a freemium business. They work commercially. But they make the free product worse than it has to be. So we made a different bet: PDFRun’s free tier is the same product as our Pro tier, just with smaller file size and slightly slower batches. No watermarks, ever. No task-per-hour limit. No mandatory account. The reason to upgrade to Pro is bigger files (up to 500 MB), faster batches, and workspaces — not to remove restrictions we deliberately put in to push you there.
Smallpdf does some things genuinely well that we don’t yet match. They have a polished iOS and Android app; we’re browser-only. They’ve held ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications longer; we’re GDPR-compliant but the higher tiers of formal compliance audit are on our roadmap, not done. Their API has been generally available for years; ours is in beta. If you need any of those, Smallpdf is genuinely the right tool.
But for everyday PDF work in a browser — compress, merge, convert, sign, OCR — the choice between paying for Smallpdf Pro and using PDFRun free is really a choice between two products that do the same job, where one happens to not gate you behind hourly limits or watermarks. We think you should try us first.
When Smallpdf may be the right pick
- You need a native iOS or Android app, not a browser-based mobile experience.
- You’re in an enterprise procurement context that explicitly requires SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 certification.
- Your workflow is built around their existing browser extension, mobile app, or integration with their e-signature product (Smallpdf Sign).
- You’re processing very large files (over 500 MB) and need their higher upload ceiling.
Common questions
Is PDFRun actually free or is there a catch?
PDFRun is genuinely free for everyday use. The free tier has no hourly task cap, no watermark, no mandatory account, and no time-limited trial. Pro exists for power users who need larger files (up to 500 MB), faster batches, and workspaces — but you can use the free tier indefinitely without ever upgrading.
Does Smallpdf really limit me to 2 tasks per hour on free?
Yes, on the free web tool. The third task in a one-hour window triggers a prompt to either wait, create an account, or upgrade to Pro. This is on their pricing and FAQ pages — it’s not hidden.
Will Smallpdf add a watermark to my file?
On the free tier beyond the task quota, Smallpdf applies a watermark to output. PDFRun never watermarks any output on any plan.
Are my files private with PDFRun?
Yes. Files travel over HTTPS, are processed on our servers, and are auto-deleted within one hour. We don’t inspect, store, or share document content. No human eyes ever see your files.
Can I switch from Smallpdf to PDFRun and keep my work?
There’s nothing to migrate — neither product stores your files long-term. Just stop using Smallpdf, start using PDFRun. If you had a Smallpdf account with saved presets or workspaces, you’ll need to recreate those in PDFRun (Pro feature). For one-off tool use, no migration is needed at all.
Why is PDFRun cheaper than Smallpdf?
Both products’ Pro plans start around the same price (approximately $9/month as of May 2026). We’re competitive on price; the bigger difference is the free tier — what you can do without paying anything.
Does PDFRun have an API or mobile app?
A free-tier API and a browser extension are on our roadmap. Mobile apps aren’t — we focus on making the browser experience work cleanly on phones (which it does, including the touch signature pad). If you specifically need a native iOS or Android app, Smallpdf has one.
